Definely: Story, Founders, Investors & Funding Rounds

Founded in 2017 by the Nigerian-born Nnamdi Emelifeonwu who currently serves as its CEO and Feargus Macdaeid, Definely is a London-based legal tech that employs Artificial Intelligence (AI) to simplify the drafting, reading, and understanding of contracts.

Definely was originally conceived by two lawyers working at Magic Circle law firm Freshfields, one of whom was one of the few registered blind lawyers practicing in the City.

Together, they set out to discover a way to increase the accessibility of legal documents to those with visual impairments and realized their innovation solved a pain point faced by all lawyers daily.

They use cutting-edge techniques to automate and drive productivity.

With their team’s unique blend of engineers, technologists, lawyers, and entrepreneurs, Definely’s solutions are used and loved by some of the world’s largest law firms, financial institutions, and multinational corporations including Deloitte, Allen & Overy, and Dentons.

The startup takes away all the stress lawyers had to go through when sifting through endless pages of both soft and hard copies of legal documents to find and make sense of the major information they need.

It is no longer news that leveraging technology is a sure means of improving productivity.

The legal field is no different as law firms that fully leveraged technology today continued to outperform their peers in terms of increased profitability and winning new business.

Definely’s business is simply to help law firms leverage tech.

The startup has intuitive software that optimizes the contract drafting and reviewing process for lawyers, thus enabling them to easily access and edit key information with a single click from wherever they are in their document.

You can submit suggestions via their contact page or if you’re an enterprise customer, your dedicated success manager can log a feature request for you, simply drop them an email.

Definely does not interfere with or corrupt your MS Word documents. Definely will also not change the formatting of your Word document.

All actions performed by you in Definely are purely local to your account and are not viewable by any other user of Definely.

Definely works out of the box to detect defined terms and cross-references regardless of the style or structure of the document or contract being reviewed.

Languages

Whilst they don’t currently purport that Definely works with any documents other than those drafted in English, some of the rules we use to pick up definitions and references are language agnostic.

Training

When you download their products you’ll receive exclusive access to their support hub which includes on-demand training videos, step-by-step guides, and quick reference sheets.

If you’re considering running a pilot with them, you and your team will benefit from tailored onboarding and live training sessions with their experts.

Integrations

Definely integrates with all DMS systems.

Definely sits on top of any contract the user has open in Word and then optimizes their navigation and drafting of that document.

There is no requirement for Definely to reach into a DMS system to extract information.

Even for multiple documents, Definely detects documents already open in MS Word, negating the need to interact or integrate with the DMS.
