Penda Health was started in 2012 to make it easy for all communities to get high-quality, patient-centered care.
Penda Health works with a wide range of partners to come up with new ways to improve healthcare. For example, they help payers get more patients and use technology to improve care.
Penda’s top priority is a good healthcare system, and to spread across all of Africa. They are committed to giving patients the best care possible, making sure their employees have a good place to work, making lasting connections with their community, and serving their patients well.
Since it opened in 2012, more than a million people have chosen Penda as their preferred medical center.
With 19 Medical Centers spread out across Nairobi, Penda is now one of the largest outpatient healthcare providers in all of East Africa.
The fact that Penda has kept a Net Promoter Score of 65% or more even as it has grown shows how great the patient experience is.
They go out of their way to hear what you have to say and then follow your suggestions so that you have the best possible experience as a patient.
When you’re sick, you need someone to listen to you and help you. Both are important to Penda. Whether you use Pigia Penda for remote medical help or go to one of their clinics in person, talking to their helpful staff will make you feel better.
Their certified doctors and clinical decision support systems give you peace of mind that you got the best care possible without breaking the bank.
As Penda Health grows its network of clinics across Kenya, low-income women and their families will finally be able to get the high-quality medical care they need for the first time.
The three Penda medical centers are in and around Nairobi and they offer full primary care with a focus on reproductive, maternal, and child health.
After seeing more than 30,000 patients, the group is now focusing on a financial plan that would allow them to treat millions of Kenyans at 100 clinics across East Africa over the next ten years without going bankrupt.
Additionally, Penda Health is one of the top 50 most innovative companies in Kenya.
How it Works
Five of Penda’s clinics are open 24 hours a day, and all of their medical facilities are open at least 12 hours a day for walk-in patients.
Under the supervision of medical officers, each facility has nurses, clinical officers, and receptionists, as well as a full set of supplies, medicines, diagnostic tools, and important equipment.
At the many medical facilities around Penda, patients can get a wide range of services, from HIV/AIDS treatment to help with family planning to dental care. These services include consultations, diagnostic tests, and medicines.
Penda’s strong electronic medical record (EMR) system allows it to speed up care for patients and evaluate results and services at the patient level.

Investors & Funding Rounds
Rippleworks
Rippleworks gave Penda a loan of $1.68 million when it invested in the company. This loan helped Penda open about 20 clinics and care for more than 250,000 people each year.
Additionally, many of Penda’s patients have daily incomes of less than $5, with a median of $3.20, and most of the organization’s more than twenty clinics are in low-income areas of Nairobi.
Therefore, Penda’s plan for growth is to build more clinics in areas with a lot of people and low incomes.
