HyperionDev: Story, Founders, Investors & Funding Rounds

Founded in 2012, HyperionDev is an online course platform for computer science education, which allows anyone to take online courses in coding with a personal computer or mobile phone.

HyperionDev is southern Africa’s largest tech education provider. It was founded as a small grassroots movement of Computer Science students working towards a single goal: to build and deliver better technical education for anyone who wanted to learn digital literacy and programming skills.

Today, that small team has expanded to include two physical campuses, a range of respected university partners, and a comprehensive online education platform.

HyperionDev offers an industry-aligned alternative to traditional learning models. With our human-led approach and accessible learning structure, anyone can learn to code.

HyperionDev has brought coding skills to thousands of students in more than 40 countries in partnership with renowned institutions, including The University of Edinburgh and UNISA Enterprise.

Since 2018, HyperionDev has seen a 640 percent increase in income. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the number of active users increased by 254%.

Additionally, they intend to continue expanding and diversifying the tech talent pools for jobs in South Africa and globally through our commitment to quality job placements and student support.

How it Works

Part-Time & Full-Time

Their part-time program is designed for working professionals who are actively pursuing a career change or progression. The part-time schedule allows you to continue working full-time in your current job whilst studying 10-20 hours per week at HyperionDev.

On the other hand, their full-time program is just that—full-time—which means you can put in over 40 hours a week mastering your craft and making your career change a reality faster. Full-time students get all their work reviewed faster and with unlimited task progression.

Bootcamps

HyperionDev boot camps are structured programs with progressive levels of difficulty, from beginner to advanced, which can be completed full-time or part-time over 3 to 6 months.

Their boot camps are designed to follow the learning path toward becoming a professional developer.

The Full Stack Web Developer Bootcamp introduces the learner to web development essentials before teaching the technical specifics of building feature-rich web applications. To complete the learning path, you will focus on using frameworks to develop fully functional web applications.

The Software Engineer boot camp takes you beyond coding to teach you how to think like a software engineer. You will construct software in various programming languages to solve specific real-world problems.

The Data Scientist boot camp empowers you to master the tools, techniques, and knowledge required to work with data and become a qualified data scientist.

Additionally, their boot camps teach practical coding skills for students to become job-ready in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional learning programs.

As such, their boot camps are perfect for people who want to learn how to code – for whatever reason or end goal – but can’t bear the thought of spending years of study and hundreds of thousands of rands doing so.

Their boot camps are also ideal for those wanting to switch careers or become professional developers because they cover the full learning path required for these careers.

On top of that, you will be issued a certificate of completion once you complete your boot camp. The certificate also lists all our content partners and supporting organizations, including Google and Facebook.

Their graduates achieve placement in the tech industry within 150 days of completing a course and they aim to secure placement in your new career within 6 months of your graduation from one of their boot camps.

They accomplish this by providing placement support and guidance during and after your boot camp and helping you with interview preparation, reviewing your CV and portfolio, and directly referring you to their hiring partners. They also help you network within the tech community, and facilitate internships at select partner organizations.

Courses

Their courses have been recognized, awarded, and endorsed by leading companies in the tech industry.

They have developed their content and curriculum in partnership with top-level, industry-relevant international organizations.

They created their Android Mobile Development content in partnership with Google and were selected by Google as its first Authorized Training Partner in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Also, they have delivered advanced Java training in partnership with South Africa’s Department of Education.

In 2016, Facebook and Internet.org awarded HyperionDev the Innovation Challenge Award Winner, and have been involved in funding the organization.

They were incubated within the University of Cambridge, and have received support from the University of Edinburgh Development Trust.

You can get access to a free trial on all their boot camps by registering for an account and exploring all the material and tasks offered in the free trial.

This allows you to start learning each discipline’s core components right away, so you can evaluate whether a specific boot camp will match your needs.

Although you won’t receive the full boot camp experience on the trial, you can sample the course material and you will be given opportunities to undertake some coding tasks.
